Learn the gender of the Spanish nouns
Unlike English, in Spanish all nouns (things, people, places, etc.) have a grammatical gender — some are always masculine, while others are always feminine. Generally, masculine nouns tend to end in -o, while feminine nouns typically end in -a. (Exceptions to these rules will be addressed later.).
In short, each noun belongs to one of these two categories. For example:
- el libro (the book) → masculine
- la mesa (the table) → feminine
It’s crucial to learn the gender of each Spanish nouns from the beginning, because it affects the article that goes with it (el / la), and later, also adjectives and other words in the sentence.
